To introduce others to canoeing at a "taster" level only. This is not a suitable qualification for canoeing leaders of groups or clubs for whom canoeing is a main activity. For staff at centres it is suitable only for first session purposes and only when under the general supervision of a higher award holder.
A Level 1 Coach meets the H&SE recommendations to be in overall charge of a Canoe Club training session in a swimming pool (provided they also hold a suitable lifesaving award).
Kayak Coaches - may operate closed cockpit kayaks, open cockpit kayaks and open canoes.
Canoe Coaches - may only operate with canoes.
Placid Water Coaches - may operate in both open cockpit kayaks and canoes including canoes used for racing.
Level 1 Kayak Coach can test Rainbow Red Badge. Level 1 Coaches may examine for 1 Star Test in the discipline for which they hold the award.
Trainee Level 2 Coaches may examine for 1 Star Test in the discipline for which they hold the award.
Coach Level 2, Canoe, Kayak
Level 2 Coaches may examine for the 1 and 2 Star Tests in the discipline for which they hold the coachingaward, for 1 star in other disciplines for which they hold the 2 Star Test, and 2 Star in other disciplines forwhich they hold the 3 Star Test.
Level 3 Coaches may examine for 1 Star in all disciplines, 2 and 3 Star in disciplines for which they hold the Level 3 Coach award and 2 Star in an alternative discipline for which they hold the 3 Star.
Level 3 is the minimum coaching qualification to become an A3 Assessor.
May be in charge in "Advanced" conditions.
For grade III inland water and above and very large lakes Level 4 Kayak or Canoe Coach is appropriate.
Level 4 Sea Coach is the correct award for expeditioning in Advanced sea conditions and a Level 4 Surf Coach should physically be in charge of a session in "Advanced Surf". Level 4 Coaches may examine the same Star Tests as Level 3 Coaches.
Level 4 is the minimum coaching qualification to be an A4 Assessor.
Level 5 Coach Award identifies a group of competent, experienced, reliable, motivated coaches with a depth and wealth of knowledge, who can be relied upon to provide practical coaching, information and guidance up to a high level. Level 5 Coaches may supervise, canoeing and examine Star Tests as Level 4 Coaches.
Level 5 is the coaching qualification to be an A5 Assessor.
Can examine for 4 Star Test in the discipline for which they are an A1* for.
Can examine for Canoe Safety Test.
