First Aid and CPR Notes

All active Coaches have a responsibility to maintain a current first aid award, to ensure they can look after paddlers in their care. Coaches sign a declaration upon registration for our Coaching qualifications accepting this responsibility. Holding a valid first aid award is also part of the BCU Coach Update Scheme; Coaches who meet these requirements are recognised by the BCU as being active and up-to-date.

In order to meet these requirements all BCU Coaches (except BCU UKCC Level 1) need a recognised first aid certificate recorded on their Home Nation Association membership record. Please see below for contact details. All first aid training needs to be delivered by a recognised provider and include within the syllabus general first aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). If a First Aid Course is not included on our recognised list, a copy of the syllabus will need to be submitted along with details of the course length and the training provider to the British Canoe Union for approval.

The minimum requirements for course length are listed below*

Please Note: An up-to-date first aid certificate must be seen every three years by the home nation. In addition, for any first aid certificates that have been issued outside the UK, please contact the home nation.

First Aid and CPR certification are only accepted from the following organizations; Red Cross, American Heart, SOLO, National Ski Patrol, Wilderness Medical Associates, National Safety Council, PADI, Board of Emergency Medicine, Medic First Aid.

BCU North America will not accept First Aid or CPR from on-line certifiers.

There is often confusion around the 4, 6, and 8 hour courses, with many people told the course is ‘one day’ and they think this is OK as the 8 hour requirement. Please help coaches ensure they access an appropriate length course. We check training contact time.

Any coach who has a first aid qualification recorded on their membership record, will not need to provide new evidence until their current certificate expires, and we accept that some of these may have qualifications that are less than ideal.

To support coaches who hold a first aid award, but have not yet sent us a copy, we will offer some leniency over what we accept up until 1st Jan 2010. We don’t want coaches who have accidently done a course that is not acceptable, to go and have to do another. We are working to ensure that we are doing everything we can to inform coaches of our requirements over the next few months. We will be publishing an article in October CoDe to inform Coaches of the changes and will create a document that we can circulate to new coaches etc.

Statement of Physical Competence

Candidates who sign an application form for a course leading to a BCU qualification have agreed to the following:

I understand that in law I have a ‘duty of care’ to others, and this duty of care is enhanced with regard to my responsibility to those whom I teach because of the training and any qualification which I may receive.”

I declare that to the best of my knowledge and belief I am physically fit, and do not have any *condition which may impair my ability to be responsible for the overall safety of canoeists in my charge.”

“I do not have *diabetes or *epilepsy, and understand that in the event of any change to my fitness to be responsible for the safety of others, I must declare the fact to the Director of Coaching of the BCU.”

*The declaring of an impairment does not necessarily debar a person from holding a coaching qualification. The BCU does its utmost to ensure that only common sense conditions are placed on those who may not be able to fulfil all the requirements, both stated and implicit, for the holding of a coaching qualification. Please send sae to the BCU Office for a copy of the policy statement giving the terms of reference under which qualifications may be awarded or continue to be held.
